Title Strategic Masterplan for the city of Bamiyan

Project goals

Located 2,520 metres above sea level on the route of the ancient silk road, the city of Bamiyan has played a highly symbolic role in the whole history and culture of Central Asia. The majestic 55- and 38-metre-high Buddha statues carved into the cliff above the city represented the apotheosis of Gandharan art, to then become an iconic and integral part of the wider cultural landscape of Bamiyan. After the Taliban destroyed the statues in 2001, Bamiyan was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today, with about 50,000 inhabitants, Bamiyan is one of the fastest growing cities in Afghanistan. The aim of the Bamiyan Strategic Masterplan is to manage the city’s demographic and urban growth with respect for the rural landscape and historical archaeological heritage so as to improve the quality of life in a sustainable perspective.
