Title Strategic Masterplan for the City of Herat
Project goals The city of Herat is the second most populous city in Afghanistan after Kabul. The complicated history of the country since the 1970s has resulted in a huge lack of knowledge and awareness of the transformation processes in the city. As a result, since the Taliban fell, Herat has been deeply transformed, but the changes have occurred in total absence of any instruments for governing the territory. The LaGeS Strategic Masterplan has been undertaken to fill this gap, providing an efficient tool to manage the city development while safeguarding the cultural and environmental heritage and improving the quality of life. The Masterplan was approved and adopted by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan government in 2016. Duration 24 months (2012-2013) Funding 476,000 Euros Funding body Ministry of Foreign Affairs Directorate General for Development Cooperation (DGCS) Partners • Ministry of Urban Development and Housing • City of Herat
