The majestic 55- and 38-metre-high Buddha statues carved into the cliff above the city represented the apotheosis of Gandharan art, to then become an iconic and integral part of the wider cultural landscape of Bamiyan. After the Taliban destroyed the statues in 2001, Bamiyan was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today, with about 50,000 inhabitants, Bamiyan is one of the fastest growing cities in Afghanistan.
